Figures checked against each source on 29 October 2026. How we check

A fast-drying screed is laid like a normal screed but made with a special binder or additive so it reaches floor-finish dryness in days instead of months. Weigh the material price against the weeks it saves.

Mapei says a Topcem screed takes ceramic tiles after a day, stone after 2 days, and wood and resilient floors after 4 days. Ronacrete says its FastDry Prompt mix reaches 75% RH in 4 days at 50 mm.

Screed planner

Plan your screed

Put in your floor and the day it's laid. You get the volume, the weight, when it should be dry enough for floor finishes, and when the heating can go on, from the makers' own figures.

Drying times are for good conditions, closed up and ventilated. The floor is tested before finishes go down, not guessed. None of the Irish screeding contractors' sites we checked publish a price per m², so the price comes from your floor.

What the figures mean on a real site

Every one of these figures was measured in warm, controlled conditions. Ronacrete warns that tests at higher temperatures or lower air humidity make drying look better than it is, and that cold, damp air and thick screeds all slow drying down. A January floor in an unheated shell won't match a lab figure.

So the screed is still tested before the floor finish goes down. Most finishes need 75% RH or less, and Mapei gives Topcem a residual moisture below 2% after 4 days.

Mapei Topcem in detail

  • Mixed at 200–250 kg of Topcem per m³ of 0–8 mm aggregate, with 110–130 kg of water.
  • Light foot traffic after 12 hours; ready for use in 4 days.
  • Laid between +5°C and +35°C, and used within 60 minutes of mixing.
  • Unbonded screeds 35 to 60 mm thick, on a polyethylene sheet.
  • Underfloor heating can be commissioned after 4 days. Mapei asks for reinforcing mesh over the pipes, and for steel mesh on compressible substrates.

When it's worth it

  • A tiler or floor fitter is booked and the dates can't move.
  • A kitchen or shop that has to reopen quickly.
  • Winter builds where a standard screed would sit for months.
  • Repairs and small areas that hold up the rest of the job.

For a whole floor, compare the extra material cost with the weeks saved. A thinner liquid screed and good drying conditions can also bring the date forward. See screed drying time for how drying is measured.

Questions people ask

What is fast-drying screed?

A screed made with a special binder or additive so it reaches floor-finish dryness in days. Mapei Topcem and Ronacrete FastDry Prompt are examples.

How quickly can you tile on fast-drying screed?

Mapei says ceramic tiles can go onto a Topcem screed after a day, and stone after 2 days, at 23°C and 50% humidity.

How quickly can timber go down?

Mapei gives 4 days for wood and resilient floors on Topcem. Ronacrete gives 4 days to 75% RH at 50 mm for FastDry Prompt.

Do I still need to test a fast-drying screed?

Yes. The makers' figures come from warm, controlled tests. Ronacrete warns site conditions can be slower, so the screed is tested before the floor goes down.
