Figures checked against each source on 29 October 2026. How we check
Kilkenny has the highest share of homes built before 1919 in Leinster, according to Census 2022, and the highest share built before 1946. That makes lime floors and limecrete a bigger question here than in most counties.
We pass requests from across County Kilkenny to one screeding contractor who covers your county. They ring you, ask about the floor and price it. Nothing is booked until you say yes.

Plan a floor in Kilkenny
Put in your floor and the day it's laid. You get the volume, the weight, when it should be dry enough for floor finishes, and when the heating can go on, from the makers' own figures.
Drying times are for good conditions, closed up and ventilated. The floor is tested before finishes go down, not guessed. None of the Irish screeding contractors' sites we checked publish a price per m², so the price comes from your floor.

Older homes
Census 2022 counted 4,162 Kilkenny homes built before 1919 (11%) and 6,287 built before 1946. In a protected structure, lifting or relaying a floor is likely to need planning permission, according to the Department's guidance, and decorative tiles or stone flags shouldn't be covered.

Radon under the floor
242 of the 1,823 Kilkenny homes the EPA measured were at or above the radon reference level, with a county maximum of about 2,400 Bq/m³. Where a radon barrier is needed, the case for a breathable lime floor is less compelling, the Department's guidance says.

Questions people ask
Can you lay a lime floor in an old Kilkenny house?
Yes, where it suits the building. Irish guidance says lime floors may suit buildings with a delicate moisture balance, but a radon barrier weakens the case, and protected structures are likely to need planning permission.
Do you cover all of Kilkenny?
Yes: Kilkenny, Callan, Thomastown, Castlecomer, Piltown, Urlingford and Mooncoin, and everywhere in between.
How much does floor screeding cost in Kilkenny?
None of the Irish screeding contractors' websites we checked on 29 October 2026 publishes a price per m². The price comes from your floor: the area, the depth, the type of screed, access for the pump and what's under it. See the cost guide for Irish merchant prices and what a quote should list.
Which screed suits a new house in Kilkenny?
Over underfloor heating, a liquid screed needs 25 mm over the pipes (Roadstone, Gyvlon, Cemfloor); a floating sand and cement screed in a house is normally 65 mm (MPA). The contractor advises once they know the floor zone and your dates.
Who will ring me?
We pass your request to one screeding contractor who covers your county. Your number isn't sent to a list. They ring you, ask about the floor and your dates, and price it from the drawings or a look at the site. Nothing is booked until you say yes. Naming a manufacturer or merchant on this site doesn't mean they're involved in your job.
