Figures checked against each source on 29 October 2026. How we check

A polymer-modified screed is a cement screed with a polymer added to the mix. Kilsaran describes its polymer-modified screed as having improved bonding and flexibility, for floor levelling and repairs.

BS 8204-3 covers polymer-modified cementitious levelling and wearing screeds. McMahons lists Kilsaran's polymer-modified FLS410 at €12.57 per 25 kg bag.

Where it's used

  • Thin bonded screeds where the floor height is tight and a 65 mm floating screed won't fit.
  • Repairs to damaged or uneven screeds. Kilsaran describes FLS410 as suitable for internal floor levelling and repairs, with improved bonding and flexibility.
  • Outdoors: Flowcrete notes most screeds are for internal use, but polymer-modified screeds can be used externally.
  • Wearing screeds that serve as the floor surface. BS 8204-3 covers both levelling and wearing screeds.

The bond is everything

A bonded screed only works if it grips the slab. The Mineral Products Association says the hardened base concrete must be prepared by mechanical methods to maximise the bond. A bonded screed has the lowest risk of cracking, curling and hollowness of the three constructions.

BondedStuck to the slab. MPA: 25 mm minimum, 40 mm normally specified.
UnbondedOn a membrane, not stuck down. MPA: 50 mm minimum, 70 mm specified.
FloatingOn insulation. MPA: 65 mm in housing, 75 mm otherwise (sand and cement).

Drying

Ronacrete says its Ronafix polymer screeds take about 10 days to reach 75% RH at 50 mm, and a 15 mm layer typically dries in 3 days, at 20°C and 60–65% air humidity. Thin layers dry fastest.

Questions people ask

What is polymer-modified screed?

A cement screed with a polymer in the mix for better bond and flexibility. BS 8204-3 covers polymer-modified levelling and wearing screeds.

How thin can a polymer-modified screed be?

It depends on the product. Ronacrete quotes drying for a 15 mm Ronafix layer, and the MPA's minimum for a standard bonded sand and cement screed is 25 mm.

Can polymer screed be used outside?

Flowcrete notes that polymer-modified screeds can be used externally, while most screeds are for internal use.

How much is a bag of polymer-modified screed?

McMahons lists Kilsaran FLS410 at €12.57 per 25 kg (VAT not stated), checked 29 October 2026.
