Choosing screeding contractors

What a good contractor asks you, what to ask them, and the warning signs.

  • Free quote request
  • One contractor rings you
  • Sources under every figure

Figures checked against each source on 29 October 2026. How we check

A good screeding contractor asks about your floor before they price it: the area, the depth on the drawings, what's underneath, whether there's underfloor heating, and when the floor finish is booked. They name the screed they'll use and work to its data sheet.

This site passes requests to one screeding contractor who covers your county. Whoever you use, the questions below are the same.

What they'll ask you

  • The floor area, room by room, or the drawings
  • The floor zone: finished floor level and slab level, so they know the depth
  • Ground floor, upper floor, or both
  • Insulation and membranes: in place, or theirs to supply
  • Underfloor heating: pipes down and pressure tested, or not yet
  • The floor finish: tiles, timber, vinyl or carpet
  • Your dates, and when the floor finisher is booked
  • Access for the truck and the pump

What to ask them

QuestionWhy it matters
Which screed, by product name?Depths, bays, drying and heat-up all come from that product's data sheet, and they differ: Roadstone FlowPlus needs 45 mm floating in a house, Gyvlon and Cemfloor 35 mm.
What depth, and why?The MPA's minimum for floating sand and cement in housing is 65 mm. Deeper means more material and longer drying.
Where do the joints go?Bays over heating are smaller: 40 m² for FlowPlus, 300 m² for Gyvlon. Joints between heating zones.
Who supplies the edge strip, polythene and joint formers? So nothing is missing on the day.
When can we walk on it, and when can the floor go down?24–48 hours to walk on a liquid screed; weeks to months before most floor finishes, unless it's a fast-drying screed.
What's the heat-up plan?Gyvlon from day 7, FlowPlus from day 14 at no more than 45°C. It has to happen before the floor finish.
How will the screed be tested before the floor goes down?75% RH for most finishes; 0.5% for calcium sulphate (Gyvlon); about 2% carbide for FlowPlus (Roadstone).
Are you insured?Ask for the certificate.

Warning signs

  • A price over the phone with no questions about depth or what's underneath
  • No product name, or no data sheet when you ask
  • A standard sand and cement screed promised "dry in a week"
  • No plan for joints over underfloor heating
  • Pressure to pour before the building is closed in

How we work

We're not a screeding company. You tell us about the floor in four taps or on the phone, and we pass it to one screeding contractor who covers your county. They ring you, ask the questions above, and price the job. Nothing is booked unless you say yes. See about this site.

The product name, depth, area, construction (bonded, unbonded or floating), who supplies insulation, polythene and edge strip, the joint layout, drying and heat-up plan, and VAT.

Can a screeding contractor price from drawings?

Often yes, from the floor plans and a section showing the floor zone. Most will want to see the site before the day.

Who will ring me?

We pass your request to one screeding contractor who covers your county. Your number isn't sent to a list. They ring you, ask about the floor and your dates, and price it from the drawings or a look at the site. Nothing is booked until you say yes. Naming a manufacturer or merchant on this site doesn't mean they're involved in your job.
